As the game progresses we find that each character has to face their own severe psychological issues caused by a traumatizing event in the past. The quests are filled with metaphors as each must enter their own personal hell. Now AM has devised a specific quest for each of its victims. 109 years of torture and humiliation have passed as the game starts. ![]() All but 5 people who have been taken hostage for the sole purpose of entertaining AM. The first thing AM does is wage total war and subsequently manages to destroy all of mankind. ![]() This new supercomputer calls itself AM (I think, therefore I AM) and has adopted one emotion from its makers: hate. By means which are not described the three supercomputers merge and become sentient. Each has built their own immensely huge supercomputer with only one purpose in mind: the destruction of the other two superpowers. Woven into the fabric of the story were profound ethical dilemmas dealing with emotionally charged issues including the horrors of insanity, selfishness, rape, racism, paranoia, genocide, and the dark rivers of human emotion that surge beneath the civilized surface of us all.Īt the height of the cold war China, Russia and America are the three ruling superpowers of the world. To succeed in the game, the player must make ethical choices to prove to the evil computer that humans are better than machines, because they have the ability to redeem themselves.Ĭo-designed by Ellison and published by Cyberdreams in 1995, the game was a unique, mind-bending work of interactive fiction with provocative psychological and ethical themes. Each survivor has a fatal flaw in his or her character, and in an attempt to crush their spirits, AM has constructed a metaphorical adventure for each that preys upon their weaknesses. It is about an maleovent computer named AM that has destroyed all of humanity save for five people he has been keeping alive and torturing for the past 109 years. I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream is a computer adventure game based upon Harlan Ellisons short story of the same name.
